Sly to return Feb. 4 with talk show on Monroe radio station
Jan. 14, 2014 from Bill Novak at The Capital Times
Sly is coming back on the air.
John "Sly" Sylvester, out of work since Madison news talk station WTDY went silent in November, will be the afternoon drive time host of a talk show on "Big Radio" WEKZ-FM, which has studios in Monroe and and Freeport, Ill.
Sly will be found at 93.7 on the FM radio dial from 3 p.m. to 6:30 pm., beginning on Feb. 4.
"I am very pleased a professional of the caliber of Sly has joined the family of Big Radio," said station owner Scott Thompson in a news release.
Big Radio has five stations, with 93.7 FM the flagship station and the most powerful in the group at 36,000 watts.
Sly became unemployed when Mid-West Family Broadcasting pulled the plug on WTDY, putting eight employees out of work.
Mid-West has changed the format of the old news talk station WTDY to sports talk with the call letters WOZN, 1670 AM and 106.7 FM.
Sly was on WTDY since 1997 and had been in Madison radio for almost 33 years.
Thompson said WEKZ-FM has a five-person news department plus a sports department covering more than 200 area high school sporting events a year.
"Radio is theater of the mind and Sly is radio's equivalent to a Broadway actor," Thompson said. "When tuned in, listeners have a front row seat."
